Amington War Memorial Project
The War Memorial in Amington Cemetery forms part of the Annual Remembrance Day Service. After standing for almost a hundred years the concrete foundation had begun to crumble and the surrounding shrub boarder was in need of replacing.
The monument itself was in near perfect condition and only required cleaning. However there were two strange factors regarding this monument.
Unusually it had been erected in 1917 and no names were present. What was known was from the inscription “This cross is erected to the memory of the Fallen Heroes of Amington presented to the cemetery by E.J. Cole Tamworth 1917”. The questions this raised allowed the volunteers an excellent stimulus for research.
